Enrique Post 2

Lourdes is a very good mother to Enrique because she left Ecuador for the best interests of the family with only the future of her children in mind. Lourdes knew what she had to do and even though Enrique and his sister didn't realize it at first, they later came to the recognition that she sent home money so they could go to school and live better than they would if she were still picking up small paying jobs in Ecuador. After Lourdes talked with Enrique on the phone when he had arrived in Texas safely with a smuggler the narrator says, "Fear drains from his mother like a wave back into the sea. It is Enrique. She feels pure happiness"(188). After Enrique first called Lourdes from the Mexican side of the border, Lourdes became extremely scared for her son because she knew how hard it was to safely get across the border. When she found out that Enrique was still alive she became ecstatic because she knew she would finally see her son again. Lourdes always made sure money was sent home to her children and she went to the U.S. for good reasons. Lourdes had the best interest of her children in mind when moving to the U.S. and this is why she was not an errant mother to her children.

  1. Lourdes continues to prove to act as a good mother because she continues to take care of her children even when in a country miles away. sending money and clothes and calling when she can. She also pours money into trying to find ways to get her children to the states with her.

  2. Also, looking back to the beginning of the book, Lourdes leaves because of her love for Enrique and his siblings. His mom expects love and respect one Enrique finally reunites with his mom, however that's not the case. Enrique keeps taking drugs and doesn't realize where he would have been if his mother chose to not leave. He would have been even more poverty stricken and starving but his mother left to support her family.

  3. While I do agree that Lourdes intended to be a good mother, her American plan did not go accordingly causing her to make decisions that did not benefit her children. A good saying is that you cannot buy happiness. For example, while Lourdes continues to send gifts and money to her children, the gifts only give them happiness for a short second. Only Lourdes presence can truly fill the emotional emptiness she has caused them. Lourdes clearly cares for her children, but it can be difficult for a child to understand that parents must make many hard decisions, but they only make these decisions because of how much they love and care about their children.
